When you are choosing a book, use the "Five Finger Rule". Open to any page in the book and start reading. When you come to a word you do not know, put a finger up. If you have five fingers up before the end of the page, then the book may be too difficult for you.
When you are reading at home with your child, it is always beneficial to discuss the story. Ask questions about the characters, setting, problem and solution. See if he/she can make a connection to another book that he/she has read or something that has happened in his/her life.
